The Restoration
a novel
The Restoration is a very dear personal project that allowed me to commemorate one of my all-time favorite stories, originally shared online. As an expression of my gratitude to the author for their incredible work, I set out to create a physical copy of the novel for them and myself that would do justice to the wonderful and moving story that it tells.
The cover of the book was by far the most challenging aspect of the project. It features an illustration that captures an important detail of the story, depicting a silhouette of a key location surrounded by natural elements – flowers and bushes – that symbolize the progression of the plot, as this location is slowly being renovated through the course of the narrative by one of the main characters.
With the help of one of my mentors, I was able to be able to print the cover using a foil-press printing technology, but this meant that I had to work with a limited selection of foil colors that weren't in my original sketch for the cover. Despite that, the technology imbues the cover elements with a slightly three-dimensional feel, resulting in a unique visual experience.
